It was a little
frightening to meet new people, to sleep away from home, and to
try new things. But it was deeply satisfying to make new
friends, learn skills, and "speak with your own voice" around
the campfire circle. For many, summer camp is the first
step on the road to independence.
For people who have Down syndrome and other intellectual
disabilities, Pathfinder Village now offers a new co-educational
summer experience, Camp Pathfinder.
Day and residential campers will be offered an enjoyable
and rewarding "sojourn" in the safe, supportive setting of
Pathfinder Village. They will have opportunities to
improve social and self-advocacy skills, gain in independence,
explore the arts, and have fun with amazing friends.
Our two-week long program
is open to people who have Down syndrome and other intellectual
disabilities who are 18 years or older, self-preserving, and
have a level of physical/emotional health that will allow them
to benefit from camp. (We are not able to provide one-on-one
supervision for campers).
Three
sessions of Camp Pathfinder
will be offered in 2011:
Session I:
July 10 to July 22
Session II: July
24 to August 5
Session III: August
7 to 19
All campers will enjoy days packed with
engaging group activities. Overnight campers will experience a
comfortable, homelike setting under the direct supervision of
Pathfinder’s caring residential staff. The camp offers a
quality transition experience for those who are eager to “try
their wings” as adult members of our supportive community.
Campers must be able to participate in all
scheduled activities. Overnight campers must be able to
room with another camper.
