Direct Counseling
Sharing Pathfinder Village's Experience Pathfinder's education, research & life planning center
The second avenue of service at the Kennedy•Willis Center on Down Syndrome is direct counseling. Families, educators, care providers, and others need practical, current advice for developing behavior, education, wellness, and Life Plans for individuals who have Down syndrome. One-on-one counseling with members of the Kennedy•Willis Center staff is available free-of-charge, and covers a variety of topics:
Of primary importance is the center's work with new parents who are making adjustments as they and their babies settle into new patterns. We counsel parents who may have difficulties in accepting the realities of Down syndrome, and who may not know what to expect for their child's physical and intellectual development. The center's staff helps educate new parents through discussions, books, articles and videos, and provides new parents with resources, hope, and new understandings. It is our goal that every child born having Down syndrome will be seen for his or her unique gifts, and cherished for his/her unique humanity. Another major focus in our direct counseling program is life planning -- guiding parents, guardians and trustees through a series of questions that will allow them to begin the family, legal and financial decisions that will insure a person with Down syndrome is adequately provided for during his or her life time. This is especially important, given the dramatic increase in life span for persons having Down syndrome over the last 30 years. The center also refers those making these plans to attorneys, financial planners, and other professionals, who may streamline the life planning process.
