Hands-on Education
Pathfinder's Village's Outreach Mission

The first part of the center's mission, hands-on education, was driven by requests to train college students and others, provide up-to-date information on all aspects of Down syndrome, and provide professionals with experience in working with people who have Down syndrome. Areas of service include:

Conferences:

One of the major contributions of the Kennedy•Willis Center on Down Syndrome is providing conferences to educate parents, professionals and students about various aspects of Down syndrome. These conferences feature known experts in their respective fields, convey accurate, current information, and allow participants to gain access to an entire network of others who are working towards similar goals.

Rochester Environmental & Sensory Processing Awareness Training:
This course will be taught by Kathleen Bishop, Ph.D., from the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. The training will deal with creating checklists to provide a consistent method of identifying  and communicating (1) personal preferences, (2) sensory processing abilities and (3) potential environmental stimuli at home or in programmatic settings that may interfere with an individual’s ability to engage with others, participate in activities  and/or carry out basic functions of daily living.

To learn more or register for either session, please contact the Center for details by e-mail or telephone (607) 965-8377 ext. 154.

Internships: At Pathfinder Village, we have found that nothing can match actual experience gained in the field. Through the years, and now through the Kennedy•Willis Center on Down Syndrome, we have assisted high school students, college and graduate-level students, and others from as far away as India in pursuing careers in human services. Through our internships in a variety of specialties, we have sent people into the world trained to know 'what works' in serving the needs of the developmentally disabled.
